The classification of autism did not occur until after 1943. Even then, most kids with autism were considered to be schizophrenic until the 1960's. So your best be would be to look up childhood schizophrenia.

The research is still ongoing to target specific genes that result in autism, there is much we have to learn. What we do know is one should look at Angelman Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome and Rett Syndrome for girls. Fragile X at this time is the leading KNOWN genetic cause of autism, 30% of children with FX have a dual diagnosis of autism. Many of these syndromes are spectrum disorders, meaning they could result in little or no impairment or severe impairment. Fragile X carriers are not immune from having a few symptoms as well, some are considered affected carriers. The best advice I could give you is that if you are concerned with genetics, see a genetic counselor, they may recommend some screenings and consider participating in autism research studies in which they are looking for these answers. Rule conditions in or out, don't just guess when there could be exact tests that could provide answers. Good luck.

Leo Kanner did not label autism until the 1940's. Prior to that it was referred to as Infantile Schizophrenia, which is still a rare but valid DSM diagnosis.

Well autism was originally thought of to be caused by parental neglect so sometimes they would take the child away from his parents and put him in a foster home. Pretty sad...
