We would like where it doesnt rain all the time and nice weather. We like the beach and the mountains. We are in our early 50's and our last child will be out of high school this year. By the way we now lived in Nebraska.

It's true that it rains a lot in Oregon/Washington but if you look at charts of the coastline you will see that there are patterns where things are in 'rain shadows'. Two that come to mind are Sequim, Washington on Puget Sound (rainfall annually 19 inches vs. 44 inches just to the east in Seattle) and Brookings, Oregon where the rainfall is about the same. Sequim and Brookings are both growing very rapidly because of their weather patterns, but it also means there is good health care and shopping oppertunities. Bend Oregon is another area that is experiencing this same growth (but there aren't beaches there!).

Personally, the area of the coast that I find to be a nice mix is the Coos Bay area. Housing has dropped back to below average for coastal areas on the West coast (it shot up this past couple years but with the drops in prices in California, things lowered in Coos Bay too). While there is a lot of rain (it can be as high as 60 inches) the numbers don't tell the whole story. It rains -- hard -- and then you get sunshine. Often in the same hour! The ground is such that getting an inch to 2 inches of rain in a day won't cause problems. Not like flash floods in other places! You can expect it to rain from about November until late December, then stop for a few weeks, then rain again until May or June. Going inland even 15 miles makes it warmer by about 10 degrees year round (and make housing prices drop by 20% unless it's for acreage). It rarely snows and when it does, the snow doesn't last but a day or so (usually just a dusting). Summers are mild with about a week of weather that you would like to have A/C for. You might look at Coquille as it was voted one of the 10 best places to live in 2004.

What makes the Coos Bay area the best though is the people. You will make friends with similar interests very quickly and will find that you run into people you know almost everywhere. And once you know them, there is a true sense of community here - people help and know their neighbors. They share fruit and vegetables; watch your house and pets if you go on a trip; answer questions and help you find people to do things; even mow your lawn - all the things you look for in a "community". Kind of like what I'm doing now in telling you about the area. Hope to call you neighbor someday!

In Oregon at the beach it rains all the time. A lot of the mountainous areas have rain, a lot of the time. Bend is nice but expensive. The eastern part of the state has okay weather but is very sparsely populated and in my opinion, rather un-pretty. As for Washington, in Seattle and along the coast it rains all the time, though I've heard Bellingham is very nice, and in central and eastern Washington it's kind of prairie-like. Spokane has a nice climate but is an ugly city. You'd be doing well to find a pretty city around Spokane, like Liberty Lake.

I've lived in both places and I know how annoying the rain can be. I lived in spokane, wa for 10 years and the weather is beautiful...hot on the summer, snow in the winter, beautiful springs and falls....and not too much rain. it's also surrounded by TONS of beautiful lakes and mountains (so no beach, but the lakes are close and there are tons.).

Real estate there right now is super cheap, but growing fast, so you should get in on it now. i would def check it out. my parents are in their fifties and love it. it's also not as small as many people think...including suburbs it's about 500,000...so it's not some little worthless town ;) good luck!

Nice weather is hard to come by nowadays. Bad weather is all over the place. In Kansas it always rains, texas too humid and Chicago always unpredictable and that's why they call it the windy city. Try to rotate during winter stay at a city with warm climate, in summer live where there is cool breezy weather. I know Hawaii is too expensive, but heard it always a good weather. I'll ask around and will give you more feed back at a later date. Good luck.

I live in vancouver, wa right now and i love it! There is about 140,000 people and there are parts of vancouver that feel country like and some that feel city like. Vancouver have decent weather, in the summer/spring time it is very relaxing weather and there are lots of outdoor thing to do by the river and ect. Vancouver is just across the river from portland, which is very very very nice because it is a big city right by you but yet you are in a nice size city like vancouver. What i really like about vancouver is that is is connected to lots of town and other cities (portland) so it never gets boring and there is always stuff to do! I love vancouver, wa/ and the metro area! Nice chioce to move!
Good luck!
