The reason that Naraku used the Shikon jewel against Kikyo & Inuyasha was to corrupt the jewel itself. He disguised himself as both InuYasha and Kikyō and tricked them into hating each other, as he describes that "the Shikon Jewel is the most beautiful when it's tainted by the hatred Kikyō and InuYasha have toward each other".
Naraku desired both the Jewel of Four Souls & Kikyō and he thought that she would use the Jewel to heal herself but instead she requested Kaede to cremate the Jewel along with her dying body, so that it would be taken to the afterlife with her.
Hope this helps with your question.

Naraku had wanted the power of the Shikon Jewel, but he wanted to see Kikyo suffer more. By going through the elaborate plot of pretending to be Inuyasha and stealing the jewel, not only was he given the enjoyment of seeing the two hate each other but Kikyo's growing hatred would further taint the jewel. He actually did kill Kikyo 50 years ago.

The Shikon Jewel (the Jewel of Four Souls) was a powerful relic, but Naraku was only a half-demon, so even with the Shikon Jewel he wasn't powerful enough. The Jewel is so powerful that only a single shard is enough to bring people or demons back to life, it makes a demon very powerful. Naraku broke the Jewel into shards and scattered them across Japan, hoping that evil monsters would pick up the Jewel Shards and perform evil deeds. It was for-told in a prophecy, that I don't know about, that the Shikon Jewel would grow more powerful in the hands of evil creatures. All the various pieces except a few were claimed by evil creatures, or Naraku gave them to evil creatures. Some of these creatures were killed by Inuyasha and others died by other means. Naraku collected those pieces and stole the ones that Kagoma was carrying. Without a Jewel Shard she can no longer return to the Feudal Period, so if she goes home then she is at home to stay.
It took a lot of scheming for Naraku to get as powerful as he and his incarnations are today. And it all started after the Priestess Kikiyo nursed him back to health. At that point the burned and heavily injured Naraku opened himself to a hoard of bodiless demons. He loved her, but knew that as a weak and disfigured man he would never have a chance. This hoard inhabited him giving him some supernatural powers, but not enough. So he tricked both Kikiyo and Inuyasha to fight, by impersonating them. Kikiyo, thinking she was betrayed, nailed Inuyasha to the Tree of Ages. Kagomie lived with her mother, and her little brother in the shrine maintained by her grandfather. She fell into the well near the Tree of Ages and was transported back in time. Kagomie would never have gone back in time if a demon, which possessed a Jewel Shard weren’t over the well looking for more jewel shards. The proximity to the shards let Kagomie travel back to the in time. One of the first things that Kagomie noticed was a boy pinned to a tree; Inuyasha. She pulled the arrow out thus releasing him (since he was pinned to the Tree of Ages he did not age). Inuyasha slew that demon and let Kagoma keep it’s Jewel Shard. He was on a quest to be a full demon, but he has learned since then that as a full demon he would be only a murdering demon that would only know rage. Kagoma joined Inuyasha and started a long quest to recover all the shards of the Jewel. Along they way they teamed up with the monk (Moroku) and the demon slayer (Songo).
Naraku is so powerful now that he has created several separate bits of himself (incarnations) to work for him; Kargra of the Wind, the little girl with the mirror, and the little boy that Kagra had to take care of for so long (he now rides the Demon Horse Ente) The boy was substituted for another child at birth and has grown to a young boy which only enhances its power. Kargra hates Naraku and wants to be free from him, but she can’t. If Naraku’s heart were destroyed then she would also die as well as his other various incarnations. Karga is doomed, because someday Naraku will want her power too and he will return all of the incarnations to himself.
Now that Naraku has an almost whole Shikon Jewel he is going to seek Koga to get the shards that are in his legs. Koga is a wolf demon and not evil, with the shards (that he got from killing some evil demons), he can run very fast. Meanwhile, Kohaku is serving Naraku as a guard for his weaker incarnations. We have just learned that Kohaku has regained his memory and now wants to take his revenge on Naraku for killing everyone in his village. He was in training, along with his sister Songo, to be a demon slayer. Naraku tricked the village to open its gates and allowed a horde of demons in that killed everyone in the village. Songo was on a demon slaying mission outside of the village and was the only survivor.
Naraku used a Jewel Shard to reactivate Kohaku as his servant. Either death or Naraku blocked his memory so he did not remember his village or his life. If the Jewel shard is removed then he will return to his normal state: dead. Once Naraku gains all the shards of the Jewel of Four Souls then he will be so powerful that he can take over all of Japan, maybe all of the world.

The reason why he went through all this trouble was b/c he wanted them to think that they betrayed one another, so that they can hate and dispise one another even when they die.

to put it simply, he was too weak at the time to use the jewel to its full potential.
