purchased a compaq fs7600. im new to this computer stuff is there a program im supposed to enable i remember my moms computer did something every so often because it specifically asked when she would not be on it say at 3 am and then do its thing every few weeks

What you need to do routinely - maybe once a week is go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and run DISK CLEANUP 1st - that will only take a few minutes.... After that, you want to run DEFRAG (same place)..... If you do that routinely, it will keep your computer running smoothly. If you do it every few weeks - it takes a lot longer.

Keeping your computer running smooth is a challenge if you don't know enough about computers, which too many people don't. I wouldn't get to wrapped up in what people tell you though. Some will say this program or that program is no good and there will be just as many that love it. Some people will say defrag your hard drive weekly others will tell you that if you defrag it will kill your hard drive. The best thing to do is take some time and read information from reputable web sites like CNet, Tomshardware.com and so on.

I am sure it a virus program. You should set it to update once or twice a week and run about the number of times. You can set this to be automatic. I don't like it updating without me being there sometimes there are things you do not need. You'll learn as you go. Please allow me to suggest downloading these two programs they are free and their use is advised by Microsoft, HP and others. These are Spybot and Ad Ware SE. Basics are to do a disc clean-up and derangement the hard drives.I do this after any large amount of downloading IE.music,DVDs etc.or after being on the net for a long period of time.I don't wait ,I do this daily.Also clear cookies,temporary internet files and history.

I think you are talking about "Defrag" Defrags your hard drive so it will run better.
