I'd ask the dealer. I have a Volvo that we were told should have premium and it runs absolutely fine on the lower grade and has for a number of years now.
Here's a link from Triple A which notes the key is whether it is recommended or required. That's a big difference.

OMG some of these answers are hilarious. Ok 87 octane gas is not "dirtier" it's like some of the others said it has a lower combustabilty rate (meaning it explodes at a lower pressure or temperature). You can try putting 87 octane in it BUT if it does "Ping" you should run most of it out and try 89. If it still pings then use premium. The detonation or pinging you hear is the fuel exploding before the spark plug ignites it. The damage caused by this is more stress on the crankshaft bearings and higher combustion chamber temperatures and possible piston damage (Over an extended period of time 100,00 mi ?) each car maker designs the car needing a certian type of octane in it. when you see the numbers such as 87, 89, 92 that means there is more octane in the gasoline. if your car manufacture states to put 89 or higher it will run better and get the proper gas mileage. I have a Saturn, which has enough power for me but the motor was made not to need much octane and I was told I should use the lower 87 since it has smaller combustion cambers. If I use higher it could make it run too hot and damage the head(s).

Premium gas is about 20 cents more than regular ( on average) 15 gal of premium would only be an extra $3 on the tankfull.Your engine will ping on acceleration because the gas is burning too hot and fast for this motor. Octane slows down the explosion in your cylinders thus providing BETTER PERFORMANCE! Come on now, you spent the cash for the performance so don't skimp on what it needs! After all $3 bucks, ain't your investment worth it?

My sister has a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The manual says the same thing for her car, but she uses regular unleaded, and nothing has happened. Ever. I think the car people says it will increase performance, but it really doesn't seem to make a difference.

The computer will adjust the way the engine is tuned so it will make less power on regular unleaded. It's not likely to do any serious damage, but the car will not run as well as it is designed to.

i own a repair shop, and nothing will happen ,,it will run as good on regular unleaded as it will on premium, the only dread-full thing that will happen is you,ll save some money, and that's about it,i use regular in my truck and it also said use premium, and i do better on the regular than i do the premium, the worst thing that can happen is you might hear a ping noise, that's called spark knock, and i doubt that you will, but if you do don't be alarmed about it,you can add some premium to the tank and it will stop it,other than that i doubt you ever noticing any difference at all, good luck i hope this help,s.

you will in all probability finally end up spending as much as you save with extra low fee gas, decrease octane is far less gas effectual and your vehicle wont preform besides, my BMWs (ninety 5 525i and 03 x5) sense gradual without bigger octane. the long term outcomes that putting standard gas might reason on the vehicle Im unsure of, yet i think of its ultimate to put in a extra physically powerful octane point, ot what ever is reccomended on your vehicle. (i've got self assurance maximum BMWs require ninety one or above?) I tension a ninety 5 525i on a daily basis and for 4 years became filling up with plus gas (87 octane). whilst i began out utilising top rate gas (ninety 3 octane) a pair of month in the past i spotted an substantial distinction interior the preformance and gas mileage.

it ok to use unleaded regular but however i do recomend not using a turkey hill or sheetz gas station to do it.they both are known for poor grades of gas. the cons are you will not get as good gas milage and you will need to get fuel filter and oil changed sooner than expected.it does not burn as rich
