A rectangular corner lot, originially twice as long as it was wide, lost a 2-meter strip along two adjacent sides due to street widening. Its new area is 684 m squared. Find its new dimensions.

(L - 2)(W - 2) = 684

(2W - 2)(W - 2) = 684
2w^2 - 6W + 4 = 684
2w^2 - 6W + -680 = 0

Now use the quadratic formula.

let x and 2x be the length and width of the original lot. The two adjacent sides lost 2 meters each, so the new length and width are (x-2) and (2x-2). Since the new area is 684 m sq,

(x-2) * (2x-2) = 684.

First use the information relating length and width:
