It's in the same spirit as talking about your friend's spouse, even though your friend has just been dating the person for years.

No it's not any sort of endorsement to gay marriage, but it is slight evidence that CR may be more of a moderate than some other Republicans, on the issue of recognizing gay relationships as valid relationships.

By the laws of the state of Massachusetts, they were a married couple. The Federal government has to recognize state's laws...it's called States Rights.

Acknowledging is a far cry from endorsing... Since the person who was being spoken about probably refers to her as such, it is just a matter of respect to acknowledge it, rather than be ignorant about it

She can't really call her Mother-out-Law...even though that is a more accurate discription in the US today.

My boyfriend of 3 years calls my parents his in-laws. And they also refer to themselves as his in-laws.

What other terminology should we use?
