Yes

But it's harder to get BACK into US than it is INTO Canada.

But... I don't think you absolutely NEED passport though. State I.D. should be enough.

While a passport is the best ID you can have, your birth certificate or state ID plus a drivers licence with picture is acceptable. Generally they simply ask to see your ID.
If you are travelling with children, be sure to have their birth certificates as well. If they are not your own children, you will have to have a signed letter of permission from their parents.
Be sure to claim everything that you take across the border back into the States. When we cross, we simply show every receipt of any product we purchased to take back. Usually they will allow you through without a hitch, but sometimes they will ask for more specifics. Just be ready and complient and polite - no matter what they say or do.

The US and Canada are currently in talks about the feasibility of requiring passports - and / or some sort of cross border ID card.

They do , they ask your name, where you were born? If the accent sounds foreign, they'll ask to see id, can be a passport, landed immigrant papers, or a id with pictures like a driver's licensce and birth certificate. They'll do a visual look at your car and if they suspect something they'll ask you to drive over to the customs office. If you're an american re-entering from Canada , have your receipts with you and don't forget to apply for the gst rebate on items you bought .

Normally crossing the peace bridge doesn't take any more than two or three minutes , delays don't happen that often , unless there's a weather delay or something unusual happens.

AS of right now , no they dont check your passport when you go through from the US to Canada , The only way they check now is if they have a reason to check you , so if you look suspicious then of course they will check .

But they are trying to pass it from the couple of years that they are going to try and get that passed , but for now you are safe for the border.

Yes they do though you will enter Canada much faster then you leave. I lived in Massena NY which is just a few miles from the Canadian border, back in 1984 myself and a few friends decided to take a day trip to Canada and have dinner.
When we were returning to the American side they pulled us over because I didn't have any identification on me,,I didn't drive at the time and didn't care my social security card on me..I do now!! It took us 2 hours,,lots of questions and a search of my friends vehicle before my information came through and they let us return home..So make sure you have identification on you and enjoy its beautiful in Canada

Yes, the check ID, punch your license plate into the computer and randomly search vehicles. What you encounter depends on the border crossing. Truck border crossings are not as busy, so the officers are sometimes bored and get a little picky.

Also, they'll ask you if you have anything to declare.

They check your passport, under the car, in the trunk and then had the adults show their licenses again. Even look in the suit cases. Not going out but coming back in to the USA.

I am from Michigan, near the border, and cross a lot to go to the casino in Windsor. They do not require a passport, however, they may ask you a few questions, and if you look suspicious, search your vehicle.

if you don't have a passport and you were born there or have a citizen card then that i.d. ussually is fine until about 2009, but the two governments are trying to work on something to make it simple for americans and canadians to cross easily.

You don't need a passport yet, but be sure to have a valid picture ID like a driver's license, or military ID, sherrif's ID, etc... it's not a bad idea to bring your birth certificate either
