My son was born at 26 weeks and weighed 4lbs 6oz at birth - and dropped down to about 4lbs 2oz during the first few days. He had to stay in the hospital for 30 days until he was strong enough to take all of his daily feedings from a bottle (instead of tube). His lungs were fine, however, and he never needed to be on an oxygen system. When he came home he was only 5lbs 6oz - still tiny!

After coming home from the hospital he gained weight quickly and was probably normal size/weight within 6 months or a year.

He is six years old now and just fine mentally and physically, and normal in size (fiftieth percentile).

His motor skills (coordination) were a little slow in developing and he's still not really athletic, but I think this is just the way he is and not related to his birthweight.
He was also slow to potty train (5 years old - ouch!), but again hard to say if this was related to birthweight or just normal for him.

On the other hand he is a very good reader, good climber, good swimmer/diver, and is generally very confident, well adjusted and happy.

Anyway, I'm sure every case is different but my son shows no ill effects from being born early and underweight.

my nephew was born at five and a half months and weighed one pound thirteen ounces. He is eight now and he is doing great. He had a few problems but medicine has come so far these days that alot of babies make it at smaller sizes. I am 27 weeks pregnant and my baby only weighs about 2 lbs right now. I have been in preterm labor twice and I was worried that if he came this early he might not make it but I have faith he will be ok if he comes early. Technology is amazing.

my wife's cousin had a baby that was less than 4 pounds and in the hospital for quite some time, but things steadily improved to the point where he is home now and doing fine. pre-mature births are not what they used to be. modern medicine has saved many that even just 10 years ago might not have survived. have faith, everything will be fine.

I sometimes float and work in a Neonatal intensive care and we see babies that barely weigh in at 1 lb make it. Your baby is 4 lbs and should have a very good expectancy. My neice was 2 months premie and weighed a little over 4 lbs, she is almost 5 now and she is prefectly fine. I wish you and your baby the best of luck.

My friend was less than 4 pounds when she wa born and that was 38 years ago. Technology has advanced so much since then too. She is perfectly healthy and suffered no long term effects from her low birth weight

My husband was born a preemie. He weighed under five pounds and he's turned out fine. He had some problems (hearing and allergies) when he was younger. But he turned out fine. I'm sure that he was in NICU for a while.

My second child was 8 weeks early and she weighed exactly 3 pounds. She is now five and a half years old and she is perfect. She is still tiny (petite), but she is perfect. Lots of prayer and lots of positivity. Good luck!
