Volcanologists (people who study volcanoes)are involved in Volcanology (the study of volcanoes).
Most of the time you simply add -ologist to whatever type of scientist you are talking about.
e.g. seismologist, biologist, anthropologist.
If its a skill or profession use -ist. same rule though.
Person who studies volcanoes: volcanologist.
