Read, my pet. Read difficult books with difficult words. But make sure that if you use a word in speech, figure out how to pronounce it first. You don't want to sound like a fool and get discouraged about your new vocabulary, right? So ask someone how to pronounce a word, and if you look a word up and it doesn't make sense, ask a person to use it in a sentence. The Oxford English Dictionary is a good substitute for a person if you don't have one handy to help you with your vocabulary.
Another way to help is to watch talky movies that have very little action and lots of moping around and emotions, chick flicks, you might say. But instead of being bored out of your skull, write down all the words you don't understand (have the pause button handy so you can stop the movie to write down the words.) Look up the words afterward, and for extra credit, watch the movie with your improved vocabulary and see if it makes more sense. Try British movies, like Jane Austen and E. M. Forster movies (Merchant Ivory stuff), Eddie Izzard comedy (funny and brilliant--I love him to pieces!), even BBC TV shows just to get weird British-isms. Just focus on MORE vocabulary, and soon, it'll be easy to learn words by their context because you'll be in tune with the concept of gaining words.
Good goal, and good luck! It'll kinda suck at first, but keep at it, and it'll get much easier and you'll sound great in no time!

Write down all the words you can think of and their meaning, test to see if you know the meanings by looking up a good dictionary (oxford) and comparing it with what you have written down.
The dictionary will help you expand your vocabulary and confirm you know the word meanings, there is no point in having a large vocabulary if you don't understand what words mean.

Read as much as you possibly can. Read anything and everything that interests you. Thoughtful reading is the answer. See how words are used and look up the ones that you can't figure out within the context. Congratulations for trying to improve your vocabulary.

I decided that I would expand my vocab some time ago... I started doing crosswords.... and subscribed to doctordictionary.com word of the day....
I also started emailing wordy friends who would have word of the day.. or week or what ever....... and we would try to give each other words that could be used in common conversation but were not common in use....
Also try online word games such as scrabble etc...
It all helps...
