How about approaching this from another angle.. how about meeting people interested in doing the things you are interested in doing? When you find someone who you enjoy, you can "come out" to them, so that you know if there are any taboos against you flirting. Even if they are not gay, you will find most who like you as a person, will like you anyway.
In the event you meet males who start flirting or asking you out, you can say you are very flattered buy you are gay (this can also let other gays know who you are and then they might feel safer to come out to you.)

I'm not sure of your feelings of online sites and profiles but there are a few sites you can find women on like myspace, planetout.com, facebook, friendster, true.com, lovehappens.com, and mate1. Some of these allow women to correspond for free but sometime there may be a few unsavory women as well.
You can also try local hangouts.
Networking works great, if you're willing to put yourself out there. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows someone, eventually. ;-)
Two of the most important things is be agressive in your search but be patient. There are gay females everywhere but in my experience it's almost always who you know.

-check yahoo groups, there are lots of lesbian groups and you may find one that is local or you could start one, otherwise you will atleast meet some online friends and build from there.
-Most colleges and universities have GLBT student associations you could become involved in
-a city or fairly good sized town near you may have a GLBT organization - check the phone book or on the internet
-get involved with a local AIDS organization, you will meet a variety of people there and they can help you find others and you will be helping our community at the same time.

Um, you meet them every day. Not all of us wear our sexuality on our sleeves though, so you might have to start a couple conversations first before you find out our sexuality.
