How do I figure out questions like '45 is what percent of 225' ?

45 is what % of 225 translates to

45/225 = y

y = .20 = 20%

Remember: Part Over Whole Equals Percent Over 100.

So: 45 (the part) /225 (the whole) equals ____ percent (what percent) over 100.

One hundred is always the same because a percentage is always the number of parts out of 100 (per-cent-age--cent means "100".)

So, cross-multiply in a big X--45*100=225Y (Y in this case is the missing percentage.) 4500=225Y. Now, take the 225 and divide both sides by it, leaving 4500/225=Y (the 225/225 equals 1--it cancels itself out.) Y will be the percentage once YOU divide 4500 by 225. Ha-HA! Gotcha!

Part over whole equals percent over a hundred. Say it until you memorize it. And 100 always goes under the percent. The question is asking you to put the two sets of numbers in a ratio--if a percent is a part of 100, then the 45 is on the same line as the percent. these guys are making this too hard. all you need to do is write the two figures as a fraction, with the whole as the denominator and the number you are expressing as the numerator, then multiplying my 100:

ie. 45/225x100

i use 100 because percentage is always out of 100.
