Define "better." It can be more economical. It can give you the flexibility to put certain special components into it. It all depends on what's important to you.

If you 1) know how to build a PC AND 2) you enjoy the process, sure save some money and build it. If you haven't done it before, be prepared to spend some time and have some setbacks along the way.

Personally, even though I have worked in the Information Technology industry for 22 years - I just go to Frys, Best Buy, or CompUSA and buy one. I would rather spend my time hanging out with the kids, reading, or surfing the net!

Have fun!

"Better" is a relative term.

Back when I started, it used to be WAY cheaper to build your own computer. However, these days, building a computer can be more expensive than buying one.

You can always build one made to your specifications that's "better" than one you build, but what are the trade-offs? If something goes wrong, you're stuck with it.

Really your choice but the advantage of building is that you can build it exactly the way you want and install exactly what you want on it and tailor it to your needs. Disadvantages would be that it does take time and you need to know how to do it (it isn't as hard as most people think, however). See website below for more info.

Depends on what kind of money you want to spend on it and how often you will upgrade it. Building your own is generally more expensive, but easier to upgrade because you already know how it is put together. Also, buying one tends to come with nice features that you won't get if you build, such as remotes, light-scribe dvd's, etc.

Basically, buy one unless you want just raw power to only use for serious gaming.

I'd say if you know how to build one, do that. Computer retailers put so much useless software and other junk preloaded on their computers.

Computer brands such as Alienware let you customize your computer. You can tell them what you want in it, and they'll build it for you. It's taken Dell forever to figure that out.
