I think it was just further affirmation to the woman that her body wasn't her own. She may have also felt guilty about the act & perhaps more dissatisfied with her husband...if he wasn't helping her out.

They did that in the movie The Road to Wellville. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. I think it's the weirdest movie I've ever seen, but it's super-entertaining. It's about the Battle Creek Sanitarium, run by one of the Kelloggs (the one who invented corn flakes to curb masturbation. But the other one wound up being the big cereal guy.)

I think it's a really expensive way to get your rocks off. Sounds like the doctors had a nice little scam going! Shameful, really--they should have given women a home version of the game. Or at least made house calls.
