New divided by old=the percentage that the new number is compared to old.

5800/5000=1.16. The whole number "1" represents the 5000 you already have, and the "0.16" is how much bigger the 5800 is than the 5000. Change the decimels to percentages, and you have 16 percent increase. Don't count the original 1 because that is not increase, it is what you already had.

the poplulation has grown by 800 people. So 5000(people) /100(percent) equals what? Take the 800 extra people and divide it by the answer to 5000/100 and there u go

But simply put it's 16%
5000/100 = 50
800/50 = 16

5000 becaome 5800 means 800 increase for 5000 population then the percentage of increase is{(5800-5000)/5000}*100=16%
