And is nepotism a form of affirmative action?

Affirmative action was supposed to help the underprivileged and disenfranchised. Nepotism is helping the privileged get ahead through favors that are not available to minorities. Affirmative Action did help those underpriviledged who are blocked from opportunities by those who take part in nepotism and racism. But as the laws were dismantled by Republicans, Affirmative Action was thrown out and the people who it was supposed to help are disenfranchised once again the way the bigots like it.

Look at it this way: With affirmative action, if a company doesn't has to choose between two equally qualified people of two different races, they'd pick the minority. Now, while that seems like racism, without Affirmative Action, that same person could turn down someone under the basis that they simply don't like them, just to allow in a less qualified person on the basis that they are their friend or of a race or sex that they WANT to hire.

I'll let you be the judge. Personally, I prefer the former. Until people can stop being bigots anyway.

Affirmative action and nepotism are both forms of favoritism.

I believe that affirmative action only can hurt the government, business, and the people who are accepted into either.

On it's base, affirmative action is a form of racism in several ways:
First, you are expressing a preference for someone solely on the color of their skin, gender, or some other demographic feature.
Second, affirmative action is staining. If a college uses affirmative action to try and increase black enrollment, ALL black students will be tainted and possibly seen as "affirmative action babies."
Third, affirmative action places a value on certain members of society over others. Blacks and Latinos are worth more than whites or Asians.

Affirmative action also hurts people. Under the guidelines established by the University of California system (before they were outlawed), blacks and Latinos were awarded extra points and Asians and Indians were hurt. An Asian or white student who might have gotten in is now not admitted in favor of a lesser qualified black student.

Affirmative action also hurts those it is meant to help. Studies have shown that black 4- and 6-year graduation rates from colleges have gone way down. This is attributed to universities letting in those who have a lesser chance of success.

It was necessary at the time of the implication. Yet government programs tend to become distorted. It turned into a fiasco when it wasn't affirmative action and became a quota system. Equal is as equal does.

It has certainly helped, and no, nepotism is not affirmative action. As a joke you might say it's affirmative action for wealthy and powerful people, like 20 dollar bills are yuppie food stamps, but it's just a joke.

It helps. And it is really unfortunate that something like Affirmative Action is still necessary in this day and age for ALL people of color and women to have equal opportunities.

Any system that requires a certain number of jobs to be filled according to race, religion, marital status or sexual orientation is just retarded!
Hire the best person for the job! Ignore race, religion,or sexual orientation.Just hire the best person!
Many people of minority status will tell you that affirmative action is a joke. Some of them will tell you that they wonder if the hard work that they put into their careers was the deciding factor for their being hired,or if they're just a "token".They might also become resentful of coworkers of their own "kind" who have similar pay,but don't exhibit the same skills This can be a helluva thing for ANYBODY to have on their mind! I've seen it in action. It can get ugly!
As for nepotism....that's something that a small family business can (and SHOULD!) get away with. But when it comes to larger (especially publically traded companies) business entities....well that's a big no no!

You do realize Affirmative Action is not just for Blacks? Its for WOMEN AND ALL MINORITIES.

It was created because there was a time when the only people who had opportunities in this country were WHITE MEN.

You might benefit from it some day. Never know, you may have already benefited from it.

I don't think affirmative action helps anything. Everyone has the same opportunity for the same education. I think the jobs should go to the ones who are most qualified, no matter what their race. As far as nepotism, it is a completely different thing. I don't think that is good either unless they are the most qualified for the job.
