chewing gum is the best way or just keep swallowing, sipping on a drink or something like that. Don't plug your nose and try to breath out of it to pop your ears, this can actually make them hurt worse. Your ears will equalize eventually. Mine usually take a day or so to be back to normal, and mine get that feeling just driving through mountains that the altitude doesn't change that much.

Squeeze your nostrils shut with your little fingers, hold your ears shut with your index fingers, build up the pressure in your nasal passages then suddenly release the pressure on your ears and your ears pop back to normal. Try wearing ear plugs or stuff small pieces of cotton in them before you take off.
