Does natural selection ever depress anyone? How about the food chain?

Natural selection seems to be at the root of everything evil in this world - bullies, affairs, xenophobia, racism. We all are driven to spread our genes. ( I know we have developed morals too though)

What about the food chain? Does life always have to involve killing the being below you and consuming it?

Can you imagine intelligent life evolving on another planet that wouldn't be based on these natural selection and the food chain?

Maybe there is sci-fi out there about this?

ooh...cool Cirric...that's one alternative. There is life even here that basically just absorbs nutrients
.
I think it is more than morality though. I mean getting eaten hurts!! Being bullied, sucks!!

And it is the whole food chain that I am talking about not just humans. It is sad to me to see and not pleasant to see a lion hunting a gazelled. or an alligator eating a baby hippo. I wish our planet didn't involve so much pain.

Absorption of sun energy and basic element would be much better....like intelligent life based more on plants.

But then plant still fight for sun...still need a natural selection alternative.

Hi. It bothers you because you have a sense of morality. But survival surpasses morality in Nature. Humans are near the top of the global food chain but there are groups that eat rice, plantain, potatoes, grain, etc as staples. Other life on a different world MAY have evolved to only eat ( or absorb or however they get nutrition) foods that do not suffer, but it would have to be due to survival, not morality in my opinion.

Seems to be. I mean, even bacteria kill something in order to survive. Or mold, or fungus. If life did evolve on another planet, I'd bet they have the food chain too. Something must always die/give way for the higher order to survive. I hope there is a sci-fi out there. It would be great. But in order for life to sustain it self, something must always give.

I can imagine it, but nature can not. You forget; nature is not cruel, just indifferent. Nature has no plan; no foresight and does not care if you anthromorphize about " evil ". Darwin's " bull dog ", Huxley, said that "all that natural selection produces can be morally opposed "; this he said knowing full well about evolved morals. Work for justice.
