I'm a Southern Episcopalian, and I'm not a Bible-thumper by any stretch of the imagination, nor is anyone in my neighborhood (especially my Jewish neighbors). However, the Bible-thumping redneck seems to be quite the stereotype these days. Just remember that there's poverty, inequality, bigotry and religious intolerance everywhere, not just in the American South.

When people feel the need to hate, they also need some kind of justification for that hate. When you can open the pages of the most published book in history and find a little piece that appears to support your hatred, it gives imaginary creedence to the argument and the blame can be shifted to the "good" book and doesn't have to be under the label of bigotry or racism, or any of the other evils that abound. It takes responsibility off of the shoulders of the morons who need to be angry at something so they won't think about death.

Snorkleman, that is completely wrong.
Not all of the south is poor. Not even close. I live in a town where a studio apartment costs over 1grand a month. MANY houses here go for a millions.

I dont know exactly why they do it, but they do. I live here and hate it.

folks in the south are basically poor. They have no real chance of getting wealthy and many can't because of their race, so they turn to the bible for inspiration.
