In what way is a machine subject to the law of energy conservation? can a machine multiply energy or work input?

i don't understand what it explains in the book.

A machine, nor any person can have total conservation of energy. Electrons get lost SOMEWHERE along the way, and there is practically no way on EARTH to prevent it!!
