they can easily get into your computer using a port scanner if you don't have a router and firewall. and if you do have them there are many other ways to get in. this info came from a book called "pcs the missing manual".

Nothing, IP addresses are not secret information. Your browser and other software is giving it off everywhere you go. Computers can't see or talk to other computers without one (on the Internet at least)...they're as public as license plates on cars.


UPDATED RESPONSE:

To the "Einstein" that thumbs downed everyone's answer. The question was "does it matter if someone knows your IP address", not "what are safe computing practices". Even if someone doesn't know your IP address they can "stumble" upon it anyway, due to the fact that port scanners scan all know IP ranges. ALL IP ADDRESSES WILL BE SCANNED. Safe computing is another issue all together, but it does not matter if somone "knows" your particular IP address. Moron.

Nothing. IP Addresses are like your home address, just knowing it doesn't mean anything will happen.

nothing, nobody can get in,well i mean they can if they really wanted too, but that would be extremely difficult to do.
