I want to copyright a logo and a name for a brand that I want to start. How would I go about this? Also is there any cheap ways to do it?

You won't copyright it, you'll trademark it. What you're trying to do is show source origin on a product or service. To claim that for a product, put TM (trademark) after the logo; for a service, SM (service mark). Don't use an "R" in a circle; that's a registered trademark which means it's actually registered with the government.

The Nolo website is a good place to go to get an introduction to this stuff. Check out: http://www.nolo.com/resource.cfm/catID/D8932879-DC34-43DF-BF65FC92D55FEE5D/310/274/

As for the recommendation of "poor man's copyright," that's worthless anymore as a copyright (not that it would help in this case -- just general information). There was some value to it when there was a state right to copyright on unpublished material, but all of that is pre-empted by the federal copyright since the copyright act of 1976. (This info is also on the copyright site, if you look for it.)

There is a poor man's copywrite. You put what you have in an envelope, seal it with tape, put the stamps over the tape. Have the post office hand stamp the postage and mail it to yourself.
This looks more like a trademark registration than copyright though.

Contact your local SBA office they will be able to tell you how to go about doing this.
