Yup. It's true.
It is called "circadian rhythm". Lack of it for an extended period of time in fact takes a large toll on the human body.
Irregular sleep, interrupted nourishment routine and the stress both can cause contribute to the problem.
This phenomenon has been documented and shown to be health hazard for most in the transportation industry, such as with commercial airline pilots and railroad operating personnel.
Some companies pay people extra to work a "nighttime differential" arrangement, to entice them to work assignments that require irregular work schedules, such as pool assignments or extra boards.
This is not the same as working a "graveyard" shift for years, as there is still some regularity to the wake/sleep cycle and maintaining proper diet.
Having done it (working irregular hours) myself for three decades I can assure you it takes a toll.

i dont think its actually been proven or true. But this could be a reasoning on this mysth or urban legend...whatever you want to make of it.
They say that sleeping during the day does not give you the same restful sleep as if you sleep at night. Hence your body never really rests. Deep sleep is when your body can trully heal and repair itself. A restless sleep adds to tension and more stresses. Stresses can cause heart problems among other things. So really working night shifts doesnt kill you, but the consequences of restless sleep can cause other health problems that can cause early deaths..such as a heart attack or stroke.

No. As long as you're getting 7-8 hours of sleep in a dark room you should be fine.

Sorry don't have clue where it was read, also read something similar, but think it mainly focused on people frequently changing their bio-rythems. Don't know if this fits example you gave.

It's enough to upset the system but I guess it depends on the individual.
