Why do young black people tip poorly at resturants? Specifically the ghetto fabulous people? I had some bad experiences where I would serve them well yet they tip a $1 or less.

I feel exactly the same way! I'm glad you specified the class of black people who tip poorly instead of saying all black people do it. I was a waitress myself for years, and I used to work in a restaurant where all the ghetto fabs went. The restaurant had to start adding tips in the check because the people wouldn't tip. And I KNOW some of them know better, but just flat out refuse to tip, even with the tip added in! They would complain and say things like " I didn't order no gratuity!" Most of the time, there would be nothing wrong with the service! It made me so angry and I truly hated waiting on some of them. Not all of them are like this, but the majority. You are absolutely right about this.
edit- Not only black people are ghetto. I've delt with white, asian and hispanic ghetto people also, and they are just as bad.

I am not quite sure how to reply to your question but I will say that you are not the only one who experiences this. There are quite a few black people that go into restaurants and expect the service yet don't think of their servers. I am sure this is true of any other ethnicitys out there too yet many servers get this treatment from their black patrons. The industry has "nicknames" for people who do that and it isn't confined to just blacks it sadly reflect Christians too and servers do dread Sunday shifts.
All in all it isn't just black who do this but people who don't appreciate their servers. Some are still under the notion that 10% is okay. I don't think people realize that servers receive like $3.00 or less an hour. They just want to be catered and will leave whatever the change is from the bill. Seriously, people have bills to pay and babies to feed yet they are generous to save cats and dogs but treat their fellow man like he is the their 50 cent slave for an hour...

wow one dollar or less?!? That is just tacky. You know some people are just rude...or perhaps maybe all they had was enough for the meal. But in any case if i go to a resturant and the server is competent then i leave 3-5 dollars, or more if its a fancy place.
Perhaps you should find a different job so you dont have to rely on tips. I dontt know...

I don't think it has anything to do with race. I think that a lot of people don't know how to tip very well. I try to leave at least 15% every place I go, more or less depending on the service of course. Younger people probably don't realize that gratuity is what is paying the waiter/waitress.

That is being racist. I think it's the low class people who tip poorly. All low class people are not black and ghetto either. They only have enough money for the meal, and the waiter is lucky to recieve any tip at all.

I have asked this question soooooo many times, and been given every reason from it's "cultural" to "they don't know any better." Also I've gotten "because they don't get the same service because you assume they won't tip." Which I know is bull. All I know is that if so many members of the black community insists on blaming whites, and their history with whites, for every single problem they have within their own community, and refuse to take ownership of their own actions, than tipping anybody properly is probably never going to be a priority. Guess I'll go get ready for all of the "who do you think you are" mail heading my way

Well, you can't say that ALL young blacks do that because it would be a tremendous generalization on your part. I guess you might have had some bad luck with customers, that's all. Black, white, Latino or Asian, people sometimes are just rude and inconsiderate!

I tip VERY well, 20 % or more. And my husband (estranged) tipped even more than that!
Maybe your service wasn't very good.

I'm curious as to how you know that they are ghetto folks? and do you really know what ghetto means? I beleive a tip in any amount should be appreciated, even though the norm is 15% of your purchase.
