I understand that the guy went nuts and killed his wife and i understand that the cops went to the dudes house but after that i'm lost! Someone help me please!

The man was nervous when the police turned up, and in his attempt to be friendly with them, AND make them less suspicious, he demonstrated what a great wall he had built in his cellar - by tapping on it. This alarmed the cat, which he had accidentally entombed with his dead wife, and it started yowling, which gave his secret away.
