Success is the reason. Often it comes so fast, they are not prepared or capable of handling the fame, money, and lifestyle that goes with celebrity status.
Elvis and Marilyn are the two stand out examples.
As you've said there are many more, some we should remember are:
Our favourite "Rebel Without a Cause", James Dean.
Funnyman, John Candy
The too young and talented River Phoenix.
Kurt Cobain
Freddie Mercury from Queen
"Mama" Cass Elliott
Jerry Garcia
Woody Guthrie
Keith Moon
Michael Hutchence, INX indeed.
Peter Allen and his mother-in-law Judy Garland.
Even teen idol Ricky Neslon succumbed to success.
And never forget,
The Door's Jim Morrison
Not all of these people died from alcohol addiction, or drug overdoses. Some from fast cars, diseases and even food.
But it was their lifestyle and success that contributed to it.

James Dean, Jim Morrison, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood(?), Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon. Others died prematurely: Richard Burton, George Harrison, for example.
Marilyn Monroe was murdered, not a "probable suicide??," as per the LA Coroner's death certificate stated. She knew too much about the Cuban Missile Crisis, among other things and she was murdered, with it staged to look like a suicide. How could she have overdosed on barbiturates when none were found in her stomach? Someone (probably a man posing as a doctor) either injected or planted the OD amount in her body.
While these people appeared to have it all, obviously there was something vitally important missing in their lives and they were in despair. Alcohol and drugs is not the solution, and combined together they are deadly.

It seems drugs and booze make a person more brave and outgoing to be able to put on a amazing performance even if they could do it awesome sober, they seem to think it's better when they are high/drunk. The stress of being famous is also huge so turning too drugs/booze sometimes seem's like the only way out for them. It's sad because it would be cool to see them live longer, janis was awesome! need more singer's like her nowadays.

I think that the pressures of fame has something to do with it. I mean...you sell yourself to the world. The expectations are so high that there is little room for error. You are constantly under a magnifying glass.
