It is a conglomerate of dust that collects on your desk, mixed with dirt and oils from your skin. Think about it: as you move your mouse around, your hand moves with it, leaving a thin film of your skin's natural oils as well as traces of sweat and dirt on your desk surface; you continue to move the mouse back & forth in that film. Over time, your mouse "churns" that film up with the dust that collects on your desk; the result is a build-up of blackish-grey crud either on your mouse ball & rollers, or on the teflon feet if you have a laser mouse.

If you want to alleviate this, you should wash your hands prior to using your computer, and dust & clean your desktop every day. Otherwise, you can expect to clean the crud from your mouse for the rest of your life. Hope that helps!!

If your mouse uses a rolling ball, it's likely to pick up more dirt and dust the longer you use it. You'll know it needs cleaning when on-screen mouse cursor movement gets jerky, slow, and/or imprecise. (Note that some stationary mice use roller balls on the top. If you have one of those, follow the manufacturer's directions for cleaning it.)

The dust which collects in houses is composed of atmospheric dust combined with dust generated by the inhabitants, mostly from sloughed skin cells and hair follicles

Your skin oil gets onto the mouse pad, the mouse picks up the oil, then whatever debris is available ends up on the mouse. Mostly flakes of skin and dust (which is about 80 percent skin anyway).

It's dirt, dust, and oils from your hands, hand lotion, etc.

You have to clean your mouse every once in awhile. The old mouses with little rollers inside, they used to make clicking sounds when the little rollers got dirty.
