my husband had smoked weed for 14 yrs but has been clean for a month and a half and we want to have a baby. I was wondering if there would be anything to worry about and if there might be a possiblity of infertility on his part.

First, congrats to your hubby! I am 31 and just quit smoking pot. I have been smoking weed since I was 14! It's not easy to stop and he deserves a lot of credit for quitting. I was really appalled to read some of the stupid/rude responses to your question. I think your hubbies sperm count will steadily increase and return to a full count in no time. You might not get pregnant right away but weed is a soft drug, unlike crack and other "hard" drugs, it does not affect the body as badly as these hard drugs do. Of course there has been some affect on the sperm production but now that he's stopped you should be ok. And not that I'm condoning it but I've known couples who smoked weed and had perfectly healthy kids who've grown up just fine. The same cannot be said for babies whose parents boozed and/or did hard drugs. Good luck with conceiving and try not to psyche yourself up too much. I think becoming "consumed" with the idea of getting pregnant can actually cause the opposite result. Try not to worry and stress yourself out. You'll be pregnant in no time. Good Luck!! P.S. I am also trying to get pregnant. We just decided to start trying and I have come across an excellent site. (Link below)

I highly recommend checking this site out. It's packed with a lot of good information and has a really good forum. Hope to see you there!

Well since these others obviously had no intention on answering your MAIN question/concern I will do my best! It is said that individuals (MEN) that smoke weed and have for a while can become infertile BUT that is mainly if they choose to smoke the seeds! My boyfriend has smoked weed since he was 13 and is 21 now, we are expecting! I guess really it just depends on the person! But just as long as he won't be smoking around you (which he is trying to quit so that is a plus, and nevermind the statements a/b a month being a small accomplishment, b/c you have to start somewhere) and you won't be smoking you should be just fine! Good Luck! ALSO your baby will NOT come out retarded b/c he smokes/smoked! I know women that smoked weed all throughout their pregnancy's and their babies came out perfectly fine! So nevermind all that BS when they really have no idea what they are talking a/b!

I will tell you that it can affect his sperm count, and i know this because my husband used to be a heavy "smoker" . I could not get pregnant we went and had a sperm count done and it was very low. We decided he shouldn't smoke any more,we never told the doctor of course, but he had to get a recount and after 3 months of no smokind his sperm count went up and the doctor thought something may be wrong with him. He's healthy and 10 years later we have six healthy smart kids.So when you do get pregnant your child won't be effected so try not to worry, My friend got pregnant and her husband smokes all day everyday so it is still possible to get pregnant. Keep having sex.

there is nothing to worry about as long as u are not the one who's doing the smoking. ur baby will be fine. another thing is that most of the time when u try to conceive it takes a while. when ur mind is at ease, off of the baby situation, it tends to happen faster.
my child's dad was a pothead as well and when i got pregnant he still was smokin weed. there was nothing wrong with my child.
if u feel that him smoking weed could have affected him then take him to the doc to make sure that both of u r able to have children.
Good Luck!

Weed can stay in your system for up to 90 days, so I would wait until after he's been clean for 3 months before you start trying to have a baby.

It shouldn't affect his fertility, but marijuana (thc) can lead to birth defects if a woman smokes it while she's pregnant...so I would think that it could be the same if a guy has it in his system when the sperm is produced.

I'd wait another month and a half before you start trying...I was reading that smoking can reduce fertility (in a number of ways), but there's supposed to be an improvement in motility and production after 90 days (once the substance is out of one's body).

Good luck.

People really need to be educated on substance abuse... give your husband a big hug and kiss for making it a whole month without smoking weed... one day at a time is the best policy... anyways... there should not be a problem with getting pregnant... you need to know when you are ovulating to better your chances...

Studies have suggested that pot lowers sperm count, but I will honestly tell you that my husband, myself and our friends who were/are all pot smokers never had any problems conceiving a baby. I don't trust "studies". Most of the people involved in them do other drugs, or are paid to be a guinea pig. Therefor not at all "honest".
--sidenote, you might want to go to babycenter and type in maurajuana. It will take you to people asking the same questions, and might even give you some great support (for your decision TO smoke) There are some links there.

It shouldn't have any effects on his or your fertility. It's just weed for crying out loud it doesn't do anymore harm to your health than alcohol or cigarettes so don't listen to all this stuff. Talk to your doctor if you're still worried and I'm sure he'll reassure you. Good luck with the baby making!

From what I've seen no. There shouldn't be anything to worry about on his part. I know a lot of people who has done worse drugs over a period of time and they still could have kids.

My friend's hubby put "Le Bong o' medicine" down, and it was like BAM! She was knocked up right away. I don't think it was a coincidence. They had been trying for 3 years or so...their cute baby is 6 months.
I'm sure his sperm count had time to liven up in a month and a half. Good luck!
