NO, they are not. Vertebrate means that they have a back BONE. Do butterflies have bones?? Do insects have bones? NO!!!! Insects are not vertebrates, they are invertebrates. Humans, dolphins, cats, dogs, horses, cows, pigs, birds, they are vertebrates. A shark is not even a vertebrate. Their backs are cartilage, so they are invertebrates.

Nope, they're insects and like all other insects they've got no backbone. I think they're arthropods but I could be wrong...
