The Nile was the main "highway" and the easiest way to travel though ancient Egypt. The answer to the second part is almost the same as the first, most older civilizations built their original settlements along river banks as that was the easiest way to travel and transport goods and merchandise as there were very few roads. the river also provided food in the form of fish and irrigation for those civilizations that grew crops.
