I just took my one month old to the doctor this week and she said she wanted to send her in for an ultrasound on her hip to make sure she doesn't have hip dysplasia...she says her hip is making a clicking noise.

Has anyone ever had to deal with this. What are the symptoms? Wouldn't you think that she wouldn't be able to move her leg or something? Wouldn't it be painful?

My ped also sent my daughter for x-rays concerned about this since her hip was "tight"- at first it freak me out because I thought some kind of trauma must have happen to dislocate her hip! However, I did a little research and discovered that its not that uncommon. From what I gathered its more common in girls since at some point in the pregnancy the hormones that allow our hips to "soften" in preparation for labor can also affect the hip joints of our babies. I believe its more common in first born and large babies as well (something to do with having less room and being more constricted in the womb.) I don't think it causes any kind of discomfort for them- doctors just want to get the joint in the correct alignment to allow it to grow in a healthy manner and prevent future issues with weight bearing and walking etc.
At such a young age, if you child does in deed have it they would just wear a sort of brace that encourages the hip back into place.
It turns out my daughters hips were fine- so I wouldn't worry to much, the doctors probably just want to be careful not to miss anything!
I would encourage you to do a little research since its a little reassuring to know what the treatment plan would be if it is an issue. I think the website I used was something like "hip baby."
Hope this helps!!

Listen to Tessie. Sounds exactly like what happened with my son. The doctor told us the baby is not in pain. In some countries with less advanced medicine these conditions are never diagnosed and never treated. These people live normal lives, but maybe walk with a limp or unnatural gait.

My son turned out to be fine, the doctor was just being overly cautious. Worst case scenario the baby wears a brace.

The doctor thought my son had hip dysplasia but i wouldnt worry. If your baby does all they should have you do is put 2 diapers on him at a time.

Sorry I can't answer that for you but I was just to my Dr. with my 8 month old and I've got a specialist appt. for the same reason. My son doesn't appear to be in pain but the Dr. heard a clicking noise and he says when he hears this he always refers to a specialist. Good luck!
