If your houses normal temp is colder then what they need then yes they need a heater.

Not necessarily, but it depends how cold it is in your house, and if the fish is sick.Average temperature should be about 65 -75 degrees. Get a cheap thermometer from wal-mart or petstore & keep it in the "green" zone then you'll use common sense to decide if a heater is needed.Too hot or too cold can cause a host of sicknesses!!!

They come from tropical waters so unless your house is about 80 degrees, then yes they need a heater.

yes they definitely need a heater to survive they need to b a certain temperature i have some tropical and some other types all in the one tank ( by mistake) and they are all fine i even have some baby swordtails that i am raising too and i havent lost one yet.

I recomend a heater for Tropical fish, there pretty cheap, you dont need an Expensive one. Check out petsmart, petco, walmart, and even Kmart if they have a pet section!

Visitherm (from Underworld) heaters are very good, as are the ones from Jager (part of the Eheim group). Avoid cheap, unbranded heaters. The chances are that these will be of very poor quality and will probably break within a few months.

If your in a cold region, where your home's temp. drops, then yes you will need a heater.
But if you're in a warmer region where there is no change or only slight, then no you don't need it
