hey, in some states u can marry ur third cousin. i wouldn't tell her to make a big deal out of it. sometimes that just happens, and if they really love each other it shouldn't matter.
i've got a third cousin (by marriage) and we don't really date, but at like funerals and family reunions, we go out on dates and hook up. of course we don't tell our families about it but its not a big deal

we had an extended family with three cousins that were girls and as tight as small towns are we all dated each other and was protective of them because they were first family and second we were all kids that the families wanted to see us together they thought the world of each because we were the children of brothers and sisters of another generation. it was a wonderful time kinda like an Andy Hardy movie of pre-nineteen fifties, we never violate personal conduct and were a very Christan town and no one had misconceptions til you get in to the stuff that gets to print today so you have to always be marginal about people reaction today. but there once was a very American way of life here to judge all by, be friends always you really have to think about it that way, i don't believe that they feel 3rd cousins are considered inbreeds if they marry, it is strange how all things are really nice when there are so many things that are not going to work in a relationship just because this closeness will never be there in strangers

i dont think its illegal to date or marry a third cousin.... is it by blood or by marriage? and i'm not surprised they didnt know, considering i barely even know a lot of my first cousins. i dont think its a big deal, unless it is grossing them out. they need to figure this out on their own.

Wow, that's a tough situation! I don't think your friend needs your opinion though, it's up to your friend.
