I was involved in a discussion about this last week where some women were debating whether or not it was effective. For the most part, it seemed like if the baby is ready, you'll be contracting very soon after the membranes or stripped. Apparently, stripping the membranes causes certain hormones to be released that trigger labor. If the baby and your body aren't ready nothing will happen.
Incidentally, the woman who brought the topic up had her membranes stripped that day and did have her baby a couple of days afterwards.

With my first baby my midwife did this on me and within 3 hours I was in labor. Stripping the membranes is a 'tool' not a guarantee. My midwife told me that if nothing happened in 24 hours then I wasn't ready to give birth, for what ever reason.
The best thing you could do to get labor moving is to have sex. The sperm has hormones that help and if you have an orgasm that too releases hormones and is what is really need to get things moven'! Or, nipple stimulation. These things can really help! Hopefully your Dr. has educated you about these options.

I had it done at 37 weeks,i was pregnant with twins 3 cm had my membranes stripped 2 weeks later i had to get induced.Go for a walk it will help maybe getting your uterus contracting. Waiting is so terrible, i know you just want it over so you can breath again without any little person kickin your insides out. You will be just fine though, try to hang ing there.

Your waters may be intact but the seal to your uterus is now gone. If you are that horny (and I totally understand if you are) check with the doctor and use a condom. This will reduce the amount of bacteria entering your vagina and uterus. Interesting note: was reading some research this week. The male prostoglandins that help with dilation of the cervix (prostoglandins being what blokes have in their seamen and what they give you to artificially induce labour) are actually more effective taken orally than vaginally! But I haven't told any guys this.

I had my membranes stripped and later artificially ruptured with my second baby but I still needed pitocin. Squatting did more good then stripping my membranes. Good luck.

I had it done with both of my kids on a Friday. My son was born the following Monday, and my daughter was born the following Sunday. So I guess it helped!
