personally i feel that john lennon did the most challenging solo work of the two- but it was often very hit and miss. the same could be said of mccartney of course but i think his music is a bit more formulaic. who is (was) the better songsmith of the two?

both were very good songwriters. they just write about different things. john lennon has gotten the most attention because of his fights for peace. maccartney doesnt do many demonstrations. i think both have had equally succesful careers. maccartney's latest album is very good. i think thats the most solo album. because he played all the instruments on it.

I enjoy all of their work but McCartney always seemed more commercialised with Lennon always a bit different to the usual stuff.

McCartney music got too fluffy as time went by. After "Band on the Run" I didn't bother.

I would have to say John Lennon because his music was closer to the heart.

I think you have to go with Lennon. McCartney is dreadfully insipid.
