I agree with you. This is a very good question. Not to worry though, all civilizations that use fiat money eventually collapse. Our turn is coming up right around the corner.

Claims that the people don't need to pay U.S. income taxes because they are unconstitutional, invalid, optional, or illegal are all totally baseless. Before giving me a thumbs down (I probably just invited about 10 of them) familiarize yourself with the responses to the tax protester arguments that you've been given.

The above link will take you to a suite of articles dealing point by point with the claims made by tax protesters. Decide for yourself whether or not they are legal. Also consider the fact that every court which has ruled directly on the merits of these questions has ruled against the tax protester arguments (though they will selectively quote from a ruling on some unrelated matter to try to "prove" that statement of mine is false).
Consider the arguments on the other side, then see if you can understand why only a few thousand people, albeit some very vocal ones, think that income taxes don't need to be paid.

Everyone is "voluntarily" paying taxes to avoid an involuntary stay in a federal penitentiary.
