If so, how and what should be used for the insulation? Is it only nessecary when using fats instead of oils?

You shouldn't need to insulate the pot. You're going to heat the mixture and boil it for a while in order to make the soap, so you shouldn't need insulation at all.

You don't need to insulate the pot. But, I used to make soap also, I used a pot strictly for soap, nothing else ever went into it like food.......Good luck, and happy soap making.
PS, your whole house will smell like the batch you are making, so make sure you pick a good fragrance....

Use stainless steel pot if You would like to re-use it.
