Your level of cynicism is admirable.
I salute you.

You thought wrong.
Rover actually made some of the best seats in the business and are very very good for motorways as long as one avoids the dreaded K series engine. I can drive my 400 from Gloucestershire to Cornwall or with a fuel stop to Northern Scotland (inverness) without any problem, In an Escort XR3 I can do about 10 miles and an Astra rather less before my back cries enough.
The Infamous Indian built City Rover, should never have been allowed in the country let alone on a motorway.
Rovers are rare on Motorways as they are all over 2 years old so the reps have all traded theirs in now.

True Rovers, like the P5, P6, SD1 and even the recent 75 were never intended for anything as mundane as shopping.

I had a Rover 220SDI for over 5 years, and it did all sorts - some shopping, lots of motorways and dual-carriageways, occasional trips to France and Ireland, even a little bit of mild off-roading, and it never put a foot wrong. Took me ages to find another car good enough to replace it.

No,no,no,
That's my car you're thinking of.
It's a 17 1/2 year old Peugeot 205, which is excellent on pulling away , filtering at T junctions ( whilst all the wide cars have to sit and wait), sitting happily behind tractors, doing local shopping, going to the library ,negotiating tight country roads, parking in tiny spaces.
It never goes on a motorway!
See what an exciting life I lead!
M
(PS not telling about the other car- now that one is a joy on the motorway-have you guessed what it is yet?)
