Yes, vague...it could be a bad lifter. Does it go away? Does it just happen when it's cold? Is it coming from the valve cover? If it's coming from the valve cover, it's most likely a lifter (overhead valve?) but if it's coming from the block and it only occurs when it's cold, it's most likely a piston skirt. Really need more info. Good luck.

You have a knock sensor located on the cylinder block this tells your engine management system to automatically adjust the timing and fuelling these sometimes fail a check on a diagnostic tool that you plug into your diagnostic port.

well you question is a bit vague, but most in likely the tapping is simply a valve depending on the year of your car a simple valve adjustment on all valves should make the tap dis-appear

Does it go away when it is warm? Does the speed of the noise increase with the speed of the engine? It could be anything from a belt tensioner to you main engine bearings. Need more details. Thanks!

cam followers worn, if they are not dished out a overhead cam can be adjusted by shimming the cam this operation is not for Shadetree mechanics either Good luck

try fuel injector treatment and lucas oil treatments
