We are going to replace the gas fire and surround in the house we have just bought, but don't know what kind to choose.
Have seen a Kinder Kalahari that we like, but after doing a bit of research on the web, am now confused.
Have also seen a xl404 which is cheaper and has a higher heat output.
Can anyone give me some pointers and also if there is a comparison site anywhere on the internet...that might be helpful.

Timithyco didn't read the question.
Radiant heat heats you and not the air.
Convection heats the air.
The ideal scenario is a combination of each.
I left my car in a garage to be repaired, it was a bitterly cold day and the workshop was open at both ends, to my surprise it was real cosy inside. There were black panel radiators in the ceiling radiating heat downwards,
In Switzerland on the terrace of the hotel the temp is -15 yet people are in swimsuits, being heated by the Sun.
If you have normal central heating, then a lesser output from the fire is OK, it is mainly for show and some radiant heat.

Convection is heating the air directly around or flowing through the fireplace (or heating source).
A lot of that usually goes out the chimney.
You can obtain more if air is passed through the heat several times as via ducts.

Your normal central heating uses primarily convection.
Some in the last 15 years grab any remaining radiant heat by running the fan after the burner has gone out for a few minutes turning it into convected heat.

Radiant heat is that which is (primarily) visible and warms objects by radiating heat/light waves onto them - like the sun.

It usually feels proportional in warmth as you go closer to or further from the fire. This would be like the glow of elements in a regular oven.

Don't know of any comparison sites.
It's seldom all of one or all of the other, but some combination.

this is a easy one, a convection oven has a fan in it that blows the heat around the food cooking it faster. Most homes do not have convection ovens. Conventional ovens radiates heat it consists of two elements somewhat like a light bulb ,but the resistance is variable ,either more or less Resistance gives you more or less heat

A quick and simple way of knowing which is best is look at the power output like a light bulb the higher the brighter or more heat!
