Although it would be nice if we could instruct our bodies to zap fat from the lumps and bumps we don’t want and keep the curves in the places we do, up to now, science hasn't shown that there's any way to selectively spot-reduce. Breasts are especially prone to down-sizing because breast tissue is made up of mostly fat and the tissues of the mammary gland that produce milk. Large breasts contain more fat. And, for most women, becoming thinner and leaner through exercise and weight loss results in smaller breasts. Just take a look at most ballerinas, female athletes, bodybuilders and super-thin fashion models and female celebs (that haven't been surgically-enhanced): thin bodies aren't usually very voluptuous.
Just as with fat elsewhere on the body, where your body tends to store extra fat is determined mostly by genetics. Often women with larger breasts store more fat in their upper body, including the upper arms, back, ribs and abdomen. Women with more lower-body fat, in the hips and thighs, generally have flatter stomachs and smaller breasts. Some women store fat evenly all over. How fat is stored in fat cells differs, too. Some obese people have many fat cells that are not fully-packed with fat, while other obese people have fewer fat cells, but they are filled to the brim with fat. New fat cells can develop with increasing weight gain, although it’s not clear as to what is the exact trigger.
No matter where your body’s inclined to store fat, there’s no evidence that you can fatten up or slim down in specific spots at will. If you usually store fat in your chest, when you gain weight, your breast size may increase, too. But if you store fat on your thighs, as you gain weight, extra heft may go to your legs, not your breasts.
How fat stores change with weight loss is genetically determined, too. Spot-toning, where you exercise a muscle group near an over-fat area on the body, may produce a ‘burn’-like feeling, but that is not causing a fat burn, it is merely the muscle fatiguing. Cardio exercise that burns lots of calories is the best way to reduce fat from all over. But again, you have little control over which body fat stores are used. Some women diet and exercise to try to reduce fat in their legs, only to find that their arms get thinner instead. Some women with more fat in the upper body or torso may diet and get thinner thighs, but not make much of a dent in their ab or upper-arm fat.
Saying that, with exercise and dieting, fat is lost and it is generally metabolized from all over the body. There is still much to learn about how fat accumulation and breakdown works. It is clear, though, that fat cells behave differently in various areas of the body. For instance, research has found that abdominal fat tissue tends to be very active—and so it appears to be reduced faster than fat elsewhere, but is also gained more easily One study from England, published in 2004 in the journal Obesity Research, found that fat breakdown was lower in the buttocks compared with fat in the abdominal region. The researchers found that levels of the enzymes that “burn” fat were 87 percent lower in the gluteal region than in the abs. Plus, the blood flow in the buttocks was 67 percent lower, further limiting the ability of the fat-burning enzymes that were present to be delivered to the fat cells. They called fat in the buttocks area “metabolically inert.” This may explain why fat in the derrière can be tough to budge.
Of course, with weight loss through exercise and dieting, fat is lost from all over the body. Even accounting for genetic differences in fat distribution, there may be a pattern where fat is lost from the upper body first and then works its way down. Women who exercise a lot and thin women certainly tend to have smaller chests.
How low your body fat becomes may ultimately determine how much fat you can lose from your breasts. You can slim down by incorporating 60 to 90 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity into your days. That can include brisk walking as well as tougher workouts. Reducing how many calories you eat will also contribute to fat loss, No matter what, if you exercise and eat well, your body will look leaner and more toned all over..
