I've been searching for about an hour, and most of the things I'm finding are about religion, and I'm not really sure how that helps me? Were people during that time very religously oriented? If so then they pretty much believed whatever their bible said, right?

Wrong.
They believed what we believe...saying that could get you in serious trouble.

You had to be 'in the group' to be able to survive, had to be with the right church, but even then people were as critical as we are. We are just more outspoken about it.
