Good question! Why can't we just get along and live in a peaceful and productive world? This was the message of the
"hippies" in the 70's, and they were right.
If you are called a hippy, that is not really a bad thing. The "hippies" of today no longer have long hair and beards.
They are the ones pushing for better healthcare and social services , and are still trying to prevent yet another corrupt administration from fighting someone elses civil war.

Ok, let me see if I can get you started thinking through this--it's a good question. First I hope they say it with a tolerant smile, at least & not a snarly synical look. You know accusingly--as ifbeing a hippie was something wrong. I was one of the first hippies at my school some 35 yrs ago, so I know the looks one can get.
Anyway, I think people like to get a handle on different parts that make a person who/how they are. Having a lable like "hippie" allows them to generalize about other characteristics attributed to the hippie culture that may or may not apply to you. I've found that a knowing, enigmatic smile & a gentle comment like "Well, you could call me that, and I'm alot more." Or, " Yes, YOU might wanna try some of their philosphies"--if they are being a smug jerk about it. And,depending on how confrontational you want to be., you could escalate your rebuttal from there--but that wouldn't be very hippie-like. ;)

Love all around was a trade mark of the sixties, that is why you were called a Hippie. A slogan of the flower children.

Because people are afraid of what this world would come to, they couldn't have fun ridiculing people, to make themselves feel better about how mean, or like, just plain out stupid they are, so they are just worried that if they can't like, make everyone feel bad, that people might just not like them.
