It's like a computer or cell phone when they were introduced. It takes some getting used to, but once you have it, you can't live without it.
It's get bad press because the people who test it have the car for a day or two, not enough time to learn and preset everything.
And, if it's that bad, why did mercedes, audi and others come up with similar versions after the bmw's?

The I-Drive system in the new BMW's is simply a on-board computer. By selecting the function you want from the menu, you can modify your cars performance, access the navigation operate the radio and many many more things. The problem for most users is the feeling that it's all so complicated. It's not. It does take some getting used to because no other car that i'm aware of offers so much control at your fingertips. The I-Drive can also be voice activated which removes the necessity of staring at the screen thus allowing you to pay more attention to where you're actually going as opposed to having an accident because you're traveling at 200 KPH and looked down to operate your computer. Good Luck.

the I-drive has been around since 2002 when it was put in the 745li. Granted it was not the best at the time but its got a lot better. Anyway the i-drive is a knob that you twist and slide to control your radio and nav and phone. People don't like the idrive cause they are stupid and don't understand they whole twist and slide concept.

it is basically a joystick for controlling entertainment, climate settings, communications settings in the BMW. once you have everything set the way you like it, the idrive really doesn't come into play. it is somewhat annoying if you want to change presets, etc. but i wouldn't let it deter me from owning a BMW.

THE I DRIVE CAME OUT FIRST IN THE E65 (745) MODEL AND WASNOT AS USER FRIENDLY WITH ITS FIRST RELEASE.THE 2ND RELEASE WAS BETTER AND EASIER TO USE.THE 2003 MODEL HAD IT.NOW ALL THE 5 , 6 AND 7 SERIES MODELS HAVE I DRIVE. I CONTROLS THE RADIO,CLIMATE CONTROL, COMMUNICATION(PHONE) AND NAV SYSTEMS.ONCE THE SETTINGS ARE IN YOU DONT NEED TO BE USING IT ALL THE TIME. ITS LIKE A PERMENETLY MOUNTED MOUSE ON YOUR CONSOLE....ITS NOT THAT BAD...
