It's the body's built in protection, because the force of a sneeze could force your eyeballs out of their sockets. True! And trying to stop a sneeze can cause damage too. These sound like crazy tales, but they are true. If you try to force your eyes to stay open, your body will try to stop the sneeze.

It is almost impossible for one to keep one's eyelids open during a sneeze, although some rare individuals report having little if any trouble doing so. The reflex of shutting the eyes serves no obvious purpose: the nerves serving the eyes and the nose are closely related, and stimuli to the one often trigger some response in the other. The closing of the eyes may be to protect the tear ducts and blood vessels from bacteria expelled in the sneeze.

Joke answer - because your eyes would pop out of your head.
True answer, it's a reflex, so we have no control over it. It is impossible for anyone to sneeze with eyes open, so if you want to make some money, bet someone that they can't do it. You'll win every time.

I was driving once and I actually did keep my eyes open when sneezing . . but only one time in my life.
I don't think anyone really knows for sure - probably it's just reflex and it might have evolved for protection of the eyes.

It's a safety measure to keep us from sneezing our eyeballs out of the socket.

I don't know. Is this a proven fact? How hard are you trying? I'll try it next time I sneeze.

I think it might be a reflex to protect our eyes from the germs that we're expelling into the air.
