BLAST compares a DNA or protein sequence that you enter with sequences already in the genome or protein databases. The search returns sequences from the databases that match in some way the sequence that you entered. If your sequence doesn't match known sequences completely, then you've probably got a new gene/protein. The identies of sequences which partially match yours can give you an idea of what your gene/protein does.
