Ever make a pin hole camera?
You can do something similar to look at the sun.
Don't ever look directly at the sun!
Even with a welder's type mask why take the risk?

(Hoo Boy, these answers !) Ok....
Never look directly at the sun without protection. Ok to use welders glass as long as it is not scratched. NEVER directly through a telescope, (and I am concerned that some one would even suggest it). It is less dangerous to look directly at the sun with no eclipse than it is with eclipse. Since the moon blocks the sun, the heat is not there and you look longer, that is why it is dangerous. However normal direct sun viewing is more dangerous. Pinhole camera idea is great both with and with out eclipse. You wont be able to tell if inverted so dont worry about it. Mirror reflection of sun on interior wall or ceiling is fine. I watched the transit of Venus one time that way. Use of a telescope to project image on cardboard or wall is ok but be sure to use the SHADOW OF THE SCOPE ON THE GROUND TO AIM IT.

Shaz has the right idea. The best thing is to borrow an electric welding helmet. It shields your whole face so you won't get sunburned.
Alternatively, most good hardware stores carry replacement lenses. You can just hold the lens up and look through it, but that isn't really safe. You may look past the lens without realizing it. So the idea of getting a piece of cardboard and making a face shield is very good.
in a pinch, a dark green glass wine bottle will work, but it will distort the image. You can see the sun as a disk, but without much detail.

A pinhole camera is a good, cheap way to do it.
Any direct viewing should be through a filter made especially to allow you to look at the Sun.
This source is inexpensive and reliable:
