moshi moshi means hello. but you can only use it when you answer the telephone. you cannot use other nihonggo(such as ohayo and konichiwa, etc..) when you greet a person on the telephone. likewise, you cannot use moshi moshi to greet a person other than greeting them over the telephone.

i think that moshi moshi means hello, usually said over the phone.
konichiwa means hello as well usually said in the morning though.

Moshi-moshi is like "Hello!" or "Hi!" in japanese, but you could only use that on the phone ( just like greetings )

Konichiwa is " Good Afternoon!" in japanese. ^_^

Victor Borge (a comedian/classical pianist) joked that moshi meant onion, so moshi moshi must mean two onions!

Seriously though, it's a form of hello.

"Moshi moshi (もしもし)" is what Japanese people say when they answer the telephone. "Konnichi wa (こんにちは)" is a greeting that you mainly use face to face, in the afternoon or evening. In the morning you use "Ohayo gozaimas (おはよう ございます)" face to face.

It's Hello, used when answering the phone.

Konnichi wa is used face-to-face (mainly in the afternoon or evening), as is ohayo gonzaimas (used in the morning). (I hope I spelled stuff right.)
