There are some people out there who are proposing that HITH is caused by not rinsing your carbon properly. Personally, I can't get behind this theory.

I think, as most do, that the hexamita parasite is an opportunistic creature and causes the HITH condition when the water conditions are terrible and the food is inadequate causing the fish's immune system to be compromised to the extent that hexamita can gain a foothold and reproduce enough to cause problems.

Some say that the parasite is already living in many South American fish when they are shipped into the country and doesn't present as HITH until water and tank conditions deteriorate to the point where the immune system can no longer protect the fish.

It's debated that the hexamita parasite is actually a secondary infection to HITH disease. Can't find a lot of info about the life cycle of it though. Some of these are rather long reads, I didn't read them, but hope they help.
